Dr.Atish T.Paul Associate Professor Dept. of Pharmacy BITS Pilani Campus delivered a lecture on the topic Understanding the role of Traditional Medicines and Natural Product chemistry in drug discovery.
Traditional medicines and natural products have served as the foundation of modern drug discovery for centuries. Many therapeutic agents in use today trace their origins to plants, marine organisms, and microorganisms that were once utilized in folk and indigenous medicine. Aspirin (from willow bark), morphine (from opium poppy), quinine (from cinchona bark), and artemisinin (from Artemisia annua) are classic examples where traditional knowledge guided the development of life-saving drugs.
