The peripheral nervous system (PNS) includes all neural structures outside the brain and spinal cord. It consists of the somatic nervous system (voluntary control of skeletal muscles) and the autonomic nervous system (ANS – involuntary control of smooth muscles, cardiac muscle, and glands).
Pharmacology of the PNS primarily focuses on drugs that mimic, enhance, or block neurotransmission at peripheral synapses.
